Ask a Marketer: How Does AI Impact Design?

How does AI impact design?

We use our expertise to answer your question.

The question of how AI impacts design is, at the time of writing, a massive one. Developments to existing AI tools are constantly rolling out, and advancements in the field of AI itself are being made at a similarly rapid pace. In this post, we’ll narrow it down to how Generative AI is impacting two popular graphic design tools: Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.

How Generative AI is impacting Canva

In October 2023, Canva rolled out its own AI-powered toolkit, Magic Studio. Magic Studio allows designers to not only generate images using AI, but also remove backgrounds and unwanted details from photos, animate designs, write copy, create presentations, and more —all with the click of a button in a streamlined, accessible, in-browser user interface. One feature of Magic Studio is the “Magic Edit” tool, which allows designers to “add to, replace, or edit (part of an image) with a short written prompt. Simply select where you want to see the change, write your wish, and watch as your image transforms.”

Use Case: Say you have a photo of yourself wearing a t-shirt, but you want to use it as a LinkedIn headshot. You could use Canva’s Magic Edit to select your t-shirt in the photo, type “business casual blouse,” and select an appropriate option from a set of results.

How Generative AI is impacting Adobe Creative Suite

In September 2023, Adobe Creative Suite announced its own set of generative AI tools in the form of Adobe Firefly. What sets Firefly apart is that it’s only trained on open-source images, unlike other AI models who dubiously “scrape” copyrighted images from the web. Firefly powers Adobe Creative Suite app features like Generative Recolor in Illustrator, which allows designers to “type text prompts and see custom color schemes in seconds.”

Use case: Say you’re designing an ad for a client and they want to see iteratives of your design using different color palettes ASAP. Instead of spending valuable time coming up with new color palettes for your design, you might type “midnight skies” into Generative Recolor for an instant palette of deep blues and purples, or “beachy” for a series of bright blues and corals.
