In short, Google is marking Merchant Center reviews generated by artificial intelligence (AI) as spam and against policy. This comes as a consequence of recent updates to Google’s Product Ratings policies, including a brand-new policy regarding automated content.
This policy states:
“Automated Content: We don’t allow reviews that are primarily generated by an automated program or artificial intelligence application.”
As AI becomes more prominent in our lives, it’s important to stay up-to-date on Google’s (and those of other advertisers) policies. We also recommend you make sure your product review strategy doesn’t rely on AI-generated reviews, and if for some reason it does, add the <is_spam> attribute to each AI-generated review to be in compliance with Google’s Product Ratings policies.
Failure to comply with Google’s policies may result in the non-compliant reviews being disapproved, and escalate to a possible account suspension for any repeated or egregious violations. Find all updates to the Products Ratings policy, including the new Automated Content policy, from Google here.
